Dr. Petra Erler
Managing director of the EEC

I grew up in East German Thuringia. After leaving school in 1976, I studied international economy and worked in an enterprise specialised on international trade. In 1984 I became scientific assistant at an Institute for international relations in Potsdam and graduated in politics in 1987. After the first free and democratic elections in the GDR in March 1990 I entered the Foreign Ministry and served first as advisor to the minister and as member of the strategic planning task force before I was appointed State Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, responsible for European Affairs. After German unification I moved to Bonn, working first as assistant of a member of the Federal Parliament than as Head of department for European affairs at the Representation of the State of Brandenburg at the federal government. In 1999 I joined the European Commission as a member of the cabinet of Commissioner Verheugen, when he was in charge of enlargement. I continued to serve as member of cabinet also during the second term of Vice President Verheugen in the Commission, responsible for enterprise and industry, being appointed as Head of his cabinet from 2006 to 2010. I left the Commission in February 2010 and work now as managing director in my own company.

I started my political carrier in 1969 after having worked as a journalist and having studied history and political sciences. I was a member of the German Bundestag from 1983 until 1999, where I hold a number of senior posts and was mainly dealing with foreign and security policy and European affairs. I was appointed Minister of State for European affairs in the Foreign Office in 1998. In 1999 I became a member of the European Commission, responsible for enlargement until 2004. In 2002 I also took over the responsibility for the European neighbourhood policy. In my second term in the European Commission, from 2004 to 2010, I served as Vice-President and was in charge of enterprise and industry. In this capacity I was the European chairperson of the Transatlantic Economic Council as of 2007.
I am now an honorary professor of Viadrina University in Frankfurt/Oder. I have published a number of books and essays on European and other issues.

Livia Erler, Assistant and advisor to the Management

After my school time in Potsdam and Bonn I initially studied history and German language and literature at the university in Bonn. In 2000 I returned to Potsdam, where I studied law at the university until 2005. During my first semester in Potsdam I also worked as a student assistant for a member of the German Bundestag. I passed my first state law examination in 2005, specialised on "International and European law." During my legal clerkship I worked in Brandenburg and at the Representation of North-Rhine Westfalia in Brussels. I passed my second state law examniation in 2008, specialised on "European law" and started my professional career in the county administration of Barnim, where I dealt with legal issues. In December 2010, after the end of my parental leave, I joined the team.
